About Us

Our Background
SPIFI Thrifter Co, short for Students Pay It Forward Initiative, was created with one simple belief: no one should have to give up on their education because of money.
We’re a nonprofit organization built to support first-generation students and underserved communities in a way that’s practical, sustainable, and deeply community-driven. Through our thrift-to-scholarship model, we collect high-quality donated items from residential partners across the Chicagoland area, give those items a second life through affordable resale, and use the proceeds to help fund scholarships for students pursuing college, trade school, vocational training, and continuing education.
But SPIFI is about more than scholarships or thrift stores. It’s about creating opportunities, building community, and making sure people feel supported while chasing goals that may have once felt out of reach.
Our story is personal. SPIFI was founded by individuals who understand firsthand what it feels like to navigate education, financial aid, and life opportunities without a clear roadmap. That lived experience is what drives our mission today. We know that talent exists everywhere, but access does not and we’re working to help close that gap.
At the same time, we believe sustainability and community care can go hand in hand. Instead of letting valuable items go to waste, we turn them into something meaningful: affordable goods for families and direct educational support for students who need it most.
Everything we do is rooted in the idea of paying it forward because when one person is given the chance to succeed, that impact reaches far beyond just one life.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to help remove financial barriers for first-generation students by turning community donations into educational opportunities.
Through the resale of high-quality donated goods, we fund scholarships that support students pursuing college, trade school, vocational programs, and continuing education. At the same time, we provide affordable, accessible goods to the communities we serve, creating a cycle of support, sustainability, and opportunity.
We exist to remind students that their background does not define their future, and that with the right support, guidance, and community behind them, their goals are absolutely within reach.
